It is harrowing but what I what I want as an audience member is something that challenges me and requires me to sit up and think. When you go to the movies now, they are mostly used for escapism and a chance to chow down on your Milk Duds and your popcorn. Like this whole thing where you can order a meal and have wine brought to your seat at a theater—it’s like, really? I like to go to a movie and sit and watch. It’s almost like church to me. It feels like such a community of the willing, people who want to be there.
This idea that a movie is hard and won’t get the same attention or win an Academy Award or won’t be nominated because people can’t sit through it, I just feel like, “put your big boy panties on and go watch a movie that I think is an extraordinary piece of art.”
